Who is Homeless According to the
McKinney Act?

Families who are doubled and tripled-up because of loss of housing or similar circumstances which force them to share housing.

Families who have lost their home due to disasters, lack of financial resources, etc.

Families staying in motels or places temporarily because they have no permanent housing.

Families staying away from home because returning to their home would mean returning to an "unsafe" environment or a situation involving domestic violence.

Families or individuals staying in parks or camping areas because they have no permanent housing.

Families residing in sub-standard housing or structures which are in great need of repair and considered unsafe for children.

Children or youth placed in foster homes due to lack of permanent housing or abandonment by caretakers.

Minor children living with grandparents/relatives due to parent abandonment or absence of parents for a sustained period of time.

Highly mobile children and youth who move frequently as part of families in search of housing or work including children and youth whose frequent school changes may result in reduced school attendance, instability, erratic performance and socialization difficulties.
