ED established the Regional Technology in Education Consortia (R*TEC)
program in the fall of 1995 to help states, districts, schools, adult

classroom speakers, teacher workshops, exhibits, and educational materials
such as interactive CD-ROMs. These resources can be customized to enhance
classroom studies and to support state standards for science, mathematics,

Labor and Education. Participants work with scientists and other NWRC staff
to see firsthand the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in today's
workforce. Students may "shadow a scientist" to learn more about a career in
science, mathematics, geography, or technology.
Programs at the National Wetland Research Center include:
- Workshop on Wetlands Mapping and GIS for Educators is an
eight-hour workshop providing hands-on experience with the Geographic
Information System (GIS) software MapX. Teachers display and query
historical databases on marsh and wetland distribution. The workshop
includes a discussion of wetland processes.
- Earth Stewards is a partnership among natural resource
agencies, schools, and the community. This conservation education program

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Aviation Education
The FAA Aviation Education Representative coordinates aviation education
services, including materials and programs for the FAA in the states
assigned to the region.
Programs include the following:
- The Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy is a one-week
summer aviation education program for high school students sponsored by
the FAA along with a host educational institution. The program provides
students with diverse experiences in aviation career exploration. The
focus is on aviation career clusters identified by the FAA, with an
emphasis on opportunities for women and minorities. A goal is to have one
program in each state and US territory. The FAA will conduct regional
leadership workshops and provide funds based on the availability of
resources.
- Aviation Education Workshops for Teachers provide teachers with
information on FAA aviation programs and materials and prepare them to
teach aviation in the classroom. Annual workshops are conducted at
colleges and universities across the nation. The FAA provides information,
materials, and speakers for the program.
- National Congress on Aviation and Space Education is sponsored
annually by the FAA in partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration and the Civil Air Patrol. The meeting includes teacher
workshops and crosstalk sessions to exchange ideas on promoting aerospace

Young people in all 50 states and the US territories are invited to
participate in PEYA, a nationwide program designed to encourage individuals,
school classes, schools, summer camps, public interest groups, and youth
organizations to promote environmental awareness and community involvement.
The two components of the program are the regional certificate program and
the national awards competition. Regional certificates, signed by the
President of the United States, are awarded to each participant by the 10
EPA regional offices. One outstanding project from each of the regions is
selected for national recognition. Interested individuals or groups may
obtain application materials and contest rules by contacting the EPA
regional office that serves their state. PEYA has been an ongoing program
